Scotch Whisky was having a bit of a crisis and the pair went broke shortly after opening their doors in 1900. Ever since, the distillery has closed and re-opened several times as it changed ownership, faced world wars, and tried to modernize. In \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e1993\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e, they were purchased by \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGordon and MacPhail \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e— an independent bottler that was turning their cash-flow into production ownership, and notable single malts. The label was successfully relaunched once again, with an official ribbon-cutting by none other than \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePrince Charles \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003ein \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e2004\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nCut to 2014, when the first single malt was released and brought with it the \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eaccolades and awards\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e — including a \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"Best Speyside Single Malt — 12 Years and Under\"\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e at the World Whisky Awards in 2014. For that feat they had to beat Glenlivet, Macallan, Balvenie… as well as Glenfiddich, Glenfarclas, and Aberlour... There are no less than \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e42 \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003eSpeyside single malt brands out there and this little gem emerged as \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e#1\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e. How's that for a revival?\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nFor the \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e2009 edition of their Peat Smoke \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003ethey upgraded the trademark Speyside single malt fruitiness with some \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eserious smoke\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e. It's a small batch affair, as are most bottles coming from the decidedly low-volume distillery. This edition has \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003ea tad less peat smoke\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e than its predecessor with phenol levels clocking in at \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e42ppm\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e (parts per million — for the smoke geeks out there). Oh, and we nearly forgot!
